German Cockroach
German cockroaches are among the most common
roaches found. They can make their way into your home in boxes, old
furniture, appliances, and a number of other ways.
Identifying the German Cockroach
Adult roaches will have a light brown color
and two dark stripes behind their heads that run lengthwise down their
body. They are on average about 5/8ths of an inch long. Young roaches will
be black with a single stripe light stripe running down their back.
German roaches will generally take up
residence in kitchens and bathrooms. They do not like motion or light and
will remain hidden behind baseboards, cabinets, etc during the day. They
will come out to feed at night.
Since German roaches produce more eggs and
have more generations in a given period than other roaches, a small
infestation can become a large one rather quickly. The female roach will
produce 6 cases of eggs during her life with each case containing 30 to 40
eggs. The eggs will then hatch within 30 days. The German roach will live
on average 200 days.
Many sprays, baits, gels and powders are
available to treat roach infestations. If you have a severe infestation,
your best bet is to call a pest control service.
